This video give and oral and visual history of Green Sphere Inc. from 1987 to 2007.

Now after 14 years in a dormant state,

Green Sphere Inc. is re-emmurging to continue to defend the war against the greens and intellectual fight, at a time where the pressure is on against the environment.

WHO WE ARE

Green Sphere Inc. is a 501(c)(3), community based organization (CBO), organized to assist organizations and individuals with education on environmental issues through cultural events, the media, and grass roots hands on projects.

Green Sphere was founded in 1987 as a means by which individuals could become directly involved, making their views known about a variety of environmental issues ranging from such issues as sources of renewable energy and population concerns, to food irradiation and stricter pollution laws.  It was determined that the best method by which to accomplish this was through the proactive use of the media as an educational tool. Through a variety of broadcast programs, and cultural presentations, the public would learn the details of critical environmental issues.

Generally, the mass media has functioned reactively--in response to environmental and social crisis.  Something more is needed--a means by which to express views, make suggestions and take direct action.  Through its interactive town meeting format, Green Sphere is providing such an opportunity.

WHAT WE DO

Environmentalizing the Media

Green Sphere Inc. takes a proactive approach towards the media rather than a reactive one.  “The public has been exploited by selfish economic interests and left in the dark about pressing social, economic, and ecological issues.  Green Sphere thrives by bringing an alternative to the public, by filling the vacuum of the dissemination of information on many of these vital issues.  Green Sphere’s marriage of ideology and technology promises a bright future for progressive media.”  Richard McCarthy Ph.D. - St. John's University  & Patricia Belcon Ph.D. - Geneseo

In August 1999 and in 2004, 3 members of Green Sphere’s staff visited the Kaiapo village of Aukre in the Brazilian rain forest.  Green Sphere raised funds to pay for the installation of two water pumps, which helped reduce infant mortality and illnesses in adults.

In Portland, Maine, a citizen presented our video on food irradiation in the spring of 1993 to the Maine Agricultural Committee… The bill, which would have allowed the irradiation of food, was subsequently defeated unanimously by that committee, due, in part, to our video.

In 1992, as noted in a letter by Vice President Al Gore: Green Sphere’s interactive Town Meeting’s involved citizens in the debates during the U.N.’s Earth Summit process which had a direct impact on minimizing the Bush  Administration’s negative influence on the Summit.  Through interactive use of the media Green Sphere is helping to give a voice to the other global super power: world opinion.  Green Sphere is dedicated to helping create a true democracy in the world.

In 1994, Green Sphere produced a teleconference on the population issues and conducted a national public debate on PBS.  It included a survey in which the audience could participate.  The results showed how the audience viewed family planning and reproductive health care.  The results were presented to the preparatory committee meeting of the United Nations conference on population, strategically adding the voices of thousands of viewers from our teleconference to the political process.  It was also presented to the Senate Bill Committee for foreign aid.  We believe this imput had a direct impact on public policy, and in 1994 Congress approved its largest allocation to date ($595 million) for family planning and reproductive health care.

In 1991, Green Sphere produced and distributed the TV series “Jazz On Tour, ” a vehicle for environmental messages and is preparing to launch a similar series: “Brasil New York” soon.

Southeast Regional Emmy Award Nomination for “One Child One Voice” 2003  & has won 37 awards.   Released on Earth Day and World Environment Day.

In 2002, Green Sphere coordinated 8 global TV broadcasts of "One Child One Voice" for the Johannesburg Summit for Sustainable Development.  This program reached over 3,000 TV stations worldwide.  This was collaboration with Barbara Pyle the producer of the program and Frank Melli.  In 2003, we were nominated for an EMMY Award for the video “One Child One Voice.”  Re-edited for the Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development. “One Child One Voice.”  “Realistically there is no quick fix.  Our planet will not be saved by any one big decision, but by many individual choices-choices by people like you and me.  Television has an important responsibility to provide the information necessary to enable us to make these choices.”   - Barbara Y. E. Pyle

These are a few of the many instances where we’ve been able to introduce new perspectives into old perceptions.

GREEN SPHERE'S PRESENT PROJECTS AND PLANS:  One of our proposed projects is to use the Kaiapo’s traditional and indigenous knowledge to develop an effective system for monitoring environmental and climate changes.  We are presently looking for funding to finish producing: ” Stone Age Generation: Kaiapo - Guardians of the Rain Forest.”  Also recently completed was the purchase of a solar powered ham radio for communication in a new Kaiapo village.
